My house seems to be getting quieter by the day - except when Max is trying to play with Maggie.

Mini aged gracefully and in April of this year, it was time to let her go. It is still hard to talk about but she had mostly good days until the very end.

Murphy decided there were too many animals in this house with Max and decided to go live with the family that lives behind us. He seemed very happy there and I brought his favorite toys and food. After about 6 months, I noticed he started coming around my house again and was very thin. I started putting food out for him and went to speak with the family to see if there was anything I could help with. Unfortunately they had moved and the house was empty. I continued to try to feed Murphy but one night over the summer, I had a dream of him when he was a young cat and he was there to cuddle with me and tell me good-bye. We have not seen Murphy since so I fear that he has left us.

And finally, Geico passed away last night. She had been lethargic and I noticed she stopped eating. I rushed her to the vet on Saturday with what I thought was an impaction. After the enema, the vet told me that he did not get much out and he feared she had a mass. I left her with him so they could do an ultrasound on her Monday but the stress was probably too much for her. I have her cage by my computer and realized that as I work, I would constantly glance over to her and talk to her. She was such as sweet gecko and I am going to miss her terribly. So will Maggie - she is looking for her now.
We have many changes coming up in our lives and a move to a new city so our remaining three fur babies will have new adventures soon.

Guess who is will try to help - yes me WIHAH! (Trish, my acronym for Wish I had a Horsey).

I have been extremely neglectful, August 22 was my last post and quite depressing - blah!

I think Trish needs to start a blog. She is talented and an artist. I am looking at new models for her display and share with compensation her work. And thanks to Trish, I may actually try to keep up with my animal updates.

SOOOOOOO, we have a change in the cast of characters:

We have a new character (feline of course) named Max. In the summer of 2016, I was in the garage and swore I heard kittens in our detached garage. I looked and the sound stopped. Spoke to hubby about it and he said I was imagining things. Then I noticed a feral black cat that would not leave our yard and faced the mighty Mini. About 5 weeks later, Hubby informed me there is a kitten in our garage (apparently my imagination is quite strong). Then a couple of weeks later another one showed up. We nick named the black feral cat Mama Cat and the kittens "uh-oh". I was able to trap Mama Cat and the two kittens. Unfortunately the orange kitten, which Hubby named Fritz the Cat (much to my dismay) was weak and departed this world in my arms at the vet. Mama Cat and the black kitten were trapped, neutered and released.

Mama cat decided that we sucked rocks and left for good. I don't blame her but I am relieved that she can live her live without the worry of additional babies. I really thought the black kitten would follow suit...

The black kitten, who tore up my arm (long stupid story on my part), decided to stick around and adopt me as his human. Now Max is part of the group. Max is my baby. Max drives everyone nuts. The problem is Murphy decided that Max was too disruptive and started to refuse to come inside.

Murphy spent less and less time in our yard. I got worried but noticed he still looked well fed and suspected he was being taken care of by someone else. That was confirmed when I received a call from a vet who scanned him - his paw was hurt and the people feeding him took him in. I have met the couple, who live in the house right behind us and they are now taking primary care of him. I brought his favorite treats, told them about his preferences and have let them know I still put food out for him The wife mentioned she was curious why he was going to our back yard - so I guess Murph still considers us his "friends".

This is a better arrangement for Murphy. The wife stays home and she seems really attached. Plus they travel and will let me know when they go out of town so I can make sure to keep an eye open for him. The boy is not happy but understands, plus he is going to college in August so Murphy would have been lost without him so this transition may be OK. I confess I was teary eyed when I was there but they are so attached I know he will be well looked after and we are his safety net.

So Max. He is Max or Maxwell Smart or Maxwell Smartie Pants when he gets on my nerves. I am the only one he will let pick up as Mama Cat taught him all humans are evil - I guess I got a pass. Will post a picture of him soon.

So, let's get Trish blogging! She is an intelligent talented person (with better grammar than I have) who needs to be on the blogosphere.

This one's for you 😀
Wow, just wow. This summer has been brutal. July 6, my son's paternal grandfather passed away. Joe was 94 years old and when his time came, he left quickly, on his own terms, probably cussing us out for making a fuss. Then my mother fell and shattered her wrist July 29 and had surgery on the 30th. Back to the ER August 9 for breating problems. I asked that she be admitted and she started to decline. A CTA with contrast August 11 showed a mass in her esophogas. Then the compression fractures in her spine. August 13 hospice, August 15 gone. Mom was 68. I suddenly realized I have no parents since dad passed in 2005.

Just wow. This summer has been brutal. Sleep sweetly mom.
Endy left us this morning peacefully with me by his head. He has been declining for the last six months and before things got too bad, hubby and I made the decision to let him play without pain. I miss him terribly and feel like my heart will explode. It is hard to image a world without Endy in it.WishIHadAHorseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658225870536527537noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7967729381233435230.post-48420875574974778062013-12-28T12:58:00.000-06:002013-12-28T12:58:09.542-06:00Maggie update :/Good news: not cancer.

Maggie is still with us and we are trying to see what we can do to make her feel better. Something is not right but she is at least eating now. They are not sure what was underneath her tongue (I am seriously considering taking her to another vet) but the labs say it is not cancer. The bad news is she still struggles to keep weight on her and keeps on over grooming - I catch her literally pulling tufts of fur out. However she appears to be feeling better since they took whatever they took from her mouth. She may not be with us for a long time but she will is still with us now.

Since Miss Maggie is too good for pictures, Endy is up for his photo session. He promised to be good when he went out in the wet yard; he fibbed.
It looks like Maggie has cancer under her tongue. She has been losing weight but still seemed to be feeling fine so we decided to book a dental appointment for her. She was not really eating the hard food but the soft food so I thought her teeth might be hurting her. I dropped her off yesterday and got a call from the vet at 10:30 am...I knew that was not good. He said he found a lesion the size of a dime under her tongue. I immediately said "REMOVE IT AND BIOPSY IT!". He then had to explain to me that while he would remove as much as he could, he could not get clean margins without removing her tongue so he would take as much as he could. He said there is a slim chance he is wrong and that it is an injury that is healing...right.

Crap.

I asked him to please do so and I would talk to my husband. It took the better part of the day to get a hold of him and he asked me to find out when I picked her up if she was in pain.

According to the vet, she probably is uncomfortable eating hard food but if she is acting normally, then she probably is not in too much pain. I got her home and she was so happy and ate like a maniac - poor Murphy moved too slowly and she ate his wet food. For a kitty that was under sedation, she moved and played like nothing had happened. The the hard conversation and the heated debate that Pat and I are currently having. When should she be put down.

If Pat had his way, he would have done it last night. I nearly took his head off. If he had gone to the vet instead of me, he would have done it. We do not know what type it is, is it aggressive or will this buy her time. I feel her quality of life is still good and so does he. So why is he feeling this way? He says he does not want her to suffer at all. I am not for letting an animal suffer but I cannot understand doing it before the suffering occurs. Yes, she was hurting with the dry food but she can eat soft food so the suffering has been alleviated. If she gains weight and is active, why not let her have the extra time. I just don't understand.

He thinks I am being selfish and I think he is being selfish. We have at least agreed to get the results of the biopsy back and watch her eating and activities for the next week. If she shows she is in pain, I am on board with putting her to sleep. I understand how much he deeply loves Maggie and think that is why he wants to do it now. He is her human and they have a connection that is so incredibly deep.

But I love Maggie too. And I would not let her suffer but I do not want to take any days away from her prematurely.

We are both right and wrong in this situation. So the question of the day is: When is it time to let go?

A2 had not been doing well for a couple of weeks. I think he had swim bladder, which occasionally betas do recover from. I gave him every shot but honestly could not do anything for him. I will really miss him and still look to his vase with the live plants in it. He really was a beautiful fish who graced my presence for 15 months.
Good-bye A2, I hope you are swimming in wonderful seas, happily flashing your colors.WishIHadAHorseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658225870536527537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7967729381233435230.post-67288822141323547902013-07-23T06:44:00.000-05:002013-07-23T06:44:06.720-05:00Mama's gotta take pictures! Ooh - bad fur-mama. They have been doing some very cute and funny things lately but I keep forgetting to get the camera!

The boy and Maggie had a talk fest the other night that was absolutely hysterical. Conor would say something and Maggie would intently answer. This went on for a good 10 minutes until we were laughing so hard we could not breath.

Gosh that felt good - thanks Maggie!

Maggie had lost a lot of weight recently and we were worried but a trip to the vet, steroids and antibiotics seemed to do the trick. She is now back to her talkative self, even if we don't know what caused this.

Next post, pictures, I promise!WishIHadAHorseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658225870536527537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7967729381233435230.post-36104676066370874402013-07-01T09:03:00.001-05:002013-07-01T09:03:28.116-05:00Husband Guidance

Conor has been diagnosed with CMT1A (well they suspect A but it won't be confirmed for several more weeks), which is a form of muscular dystrophy. Blah. There are some tranistions that we will help him make since he has lost so much function in his hands but nothing we can't get through. Blah. He is handling this well and is mostly concerned with the loss of his hand fuction - I don't think he has really absorbed what is going on with his legs yet. Blah. He will be 14 in a couple of months. Yeah!

I have converted my other blog to private since I need a place to privately rant and to keep track of the research and Conor's progress. I so admire the people who can hang it out there - I am not one of them. So this will continue to be the animal adventure spot. Just don't be surprised if you see braces on the boy.

This is a different path of the same life. I love that kid so much and am thankful for the wonderful things we do have.

Did I say "Blah"?
A is 19 months old and a happy, beautiful boy. Kind of like my little E - I wish I had pictures of them together. My cousin, as much as he tried to avoid it, has found himself a single father. A is with him all the time and I am so proud at how my cousin has stepped up to the plate. He adores that little boy. My cousin and I are more like brother and sister so I feel especially close to his son.

We took him to a fund raiser for City Park, Tails But No Black Tie, that a fun Grand Prix Competition. My aunt jumped but we missed it because her start time was after 8:30 pm.
Holy cow do I miss mountains! So what does bird in an airport have to do with that trip? Conor and I were waiting for our plane in the Denver airport and the cutest little sparrow suddenly swooped down and sat across from us. Conor and I watched it and it begged for food. It then calmly preened itself and looked happy. I realized that NO ONE was paying attention! Finally, a 3 year old saw it, squawked happily to him mother, who ignored him. It finally flew off and passed within a couple of feet of a man's head, who did not notice it.

It is kind of sad that in this busy world no one would enjoy a bird in an airport. Well, we did.

Picture time!
The three amigos. We have been friends for 40 years! I am in the middle, they were kind to crouch down a bit, I am 5'1", they are 5'11" and 6'.

A 3D model where the moon spins around the earth and the sun really lights up. I wish my picture taking skills were better but here it is a dark room:

He took 2 battery operated push lights that we got at Walmart (they were on sale, $4 for 2 including the batteries!), spray painted them yellow, created a moving lever so the moon could circle the earth and put the moon phases below it. It looks so much better in person but I am proud of all the time he put into this. It was supposed to be geared for a 3rd grader that he is supposed to demo it for so this is simple and elegant. Total cost of the project: $12. Gotta love the boy!

How does this relate to animals? Try keeping 4 cats away from it! I had pieces of it drying in the oven, the pantry, etc. I am glad we decided to make it in pieces for transportation and hiding purposes.

Happy week-end everyone! And don't forget to hug your horse (imaginary or real)!WishIHadAHorseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658225870536527537noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7967729381233435230.post-3121967803896722632013-01-27T09:52:00.004-06:002013-01-27T09:56:20.987-06:00Something a little differentI am still working on my photography skills and just am not making the progress I hoped to make - most of that due to time constraints. The inspiration for this blog was reading other blogs so I decided I would list the blogs I follow.

In alphabetical order:

Brown Eyed Cowgirl http://browneyedcowgirls.blogspot.com: Really wonderful information on riding and how to handle horses. I have enjoyed following BEC as she develops her horses as well as her other adventures.

Fern Valley Appaloosas http://fernvalley01.blogspot.com: Awesome writing and a very inspirational read. Her pictures are wonderful and the narration brings everything to life. I have followed her for a very long time and often reread favorite posts for inspiration when I need an additional nudge.

Green n Green = Blank n Blue http://www.wildponybeast.com: The last time I rode seriously I was in my late teens so I am green. This was the first blog I started to follow and boy was I enthralled. She is so open and a talented writer. She is currently occupied and not riding but I continue to check in on this blog.

Laughing Orca Ranch http://laughingorcaranch.blogspot.com: This is what I wish I was doing. In my heart, I am a country girl, but fate has me working in the city with computers. I love my life but part of me wishes I had stayed true to my country nature. But then again, I would not have my son and husband so, no, there are no regrets. My hope is that when my son graduates from college, hubby and I can move away from the city and have some nice riding adventures. The photography is amazing!

Project Runaway: The Uncatchable Number 257 http://uncatchablenumber257.blogspot.com: No words can express how much I a moved by this young lady's dedication to this pearl of a horse. Sometime I wonder if she things I am a stalker but she really is inspirational in her connection to Imogen.

Restoring Joy http://helpingjoy.blogspot.com: This blogger's quirky sense of humor won me over immediately. I enjoy following her updates on these beasties that are her children.

The Adventures of Jack & Jill http://stonegatefarm-adventuresofjackjill.blogspot.com: While she does not post any more and uses Facebook, the posts are incredibly witty and absolutely hysterical. I still go back from time to time for a smile.

The Continental Drift: A Piece of a Heart Horse Comes Home http://the-continental-drift.blogspot.com: This is Imogen's mom who had an incredible adventure bringing Pangea home. Pangea appears more in Imogen's blog as these two girls have become best friends.

Wyvern Oaks http://pieceofheaven1951.blogspot.com: I just started following this blog and am already hooked. I am still reading backwards but look forward to additional adventures here.

I often wonder if you are really aware of how many unknown masses you really touch. Thank you for sharing pieces of yourself so freely on the interewebs.WishIHadAHorseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658225870536527537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7967729381233435230.post-81403496682894226002013-01-21T09:43:00.001-06:002013-01-21T09:44:00.832-06:00Princess AshleyI love this cat. She is temperamental but sweet and has the loudest purr. She is also the one of the four that will hiss and spit with the most drama. This is my favorite photo, I think he show her 'tude quite well. She was getting very tired of me taking pictures of her - come on mom, STOP IT!
If THEY can be relaxed in close proximity, I am confident there can be peace elsewhere.
Some people wonder why I am so affected by hurricanes - the pictures above were of where I work one week after Katrina. So many wonderful soldiers protected our hospital. So many wonderful men and women helped rescue and house the vulnerable. Yes, they set up camp in our parking lots and open space. They were very welcomed there.

I was asked to go in a little over a week after the hurricane to retrieve research samples that were in CO2 tanks. Some of the cell lines were 20+ years old and back then, they were not anywhere else. It was a grueling 18 hour day driving in from Baton Rouge escorted by the National Guard for our protection. I ran across these pictures and thought about the people I met and how I saw so much more good than bad. My faith in humanity was restored in those weeks as my son and I were taken in by strangers and I had the Guard and commandos watching over me that day. The Lord sent angels in fatigue to make sure I made it back safely.

Oh, and here is me with the commandos! It is a good thing pictures cannot emit odors ..we were very, very smelly that day!
While I had not lost the weight I wanted to, I was going to do it anyway. But I have been concerned with my balance, which I blamed on the weight. After we recovered from Isaac, my balance seemed to get worse, walking down stairs was terrifying. Then the vertigo and the nausea started. A couple of minor incidents that I ignored, but then the big one at work. I turned a corner and the world started spinning. I grabbed the wall and had to slide down it. Working at a hospital has its benefits because I was whisked to the ER. It lasted a good 30 minutes but by the time I was seen, it had subsided. My blood pressure was high, so that is what they said it was. I went to my general practitioner and she wanted to adjust my blood pressure medicine but something told me that was not it. The almost constant nausea did not make sense to me.

So I went to an ENT who ordered a bunch of tests. I was reassured because he said it was most likely a type of vertigo that was caused by crystals that could be easily treated. But that did not prove to be the case. The tests show I have an inner ear disorder called Meniere's disease. The fluid inside both is too high. I already have significant hearing loss and can only hear in the middle range. If this is not controlled, the vertigo will continue and potentially get worse and I will continue to lose my hearing. The nausea will continue as well.

Three are four stages of treatment: environmental, medicine, more medicine, surgery. Needless to say I chose the environmental option. The first thing I need to do is to try to keep my daily sodium level to between 1000 - 1500 mg, the lower the better. The next thing is to eliminate caffeine from my diet. Nicotine is third (yes, I sneak a smoke from time to time) and finally sugar needs to be minimized. The last two won't be a problem, it is the first two that will be the challenge.

So, I have decided that I will need to view this in its most simple terms: eliminate processed foods. I think that is the only way I can manage this. Salt is used in canned and frozen foods, it looks all like all natural is where I am headed. I re-test in six months but if I have another severe episode, I need to start the medicine. The biggest challenge will be the boiled seafood here, which I love! I will have to figure out how to boil with spices and no salt.

I must say I was very upset when the doctor told me. I need to make sure the vertigo does not happen again before I start riding. If I gets worse, I will not be be to drive. Not to mention the hearing loss.

But God has his plan for me and while this is all new, if the worse thing that happens is that I eat healthier, then there is no room for a pity party in my life. No matter this progresses, He has His plan.

So riding will wait...for now.WishIHadAHorseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658225870536527537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7967729381233435230.post-63812451093186492462012-09-03T08:02:00.001-05:002012-09-03T08:02:09.015-05:00Animal PerspectiveWe are home safe and sound. The trip to Arkansas was very tiring but I was glad we evacuated because my mother's house was without power. We have minor damage to our house and fences - nothing we can't fix ourselves so I feel very blessed.

Now - for the animals input on this:

Endy - a.k.a. the Big Dumb Dog

I went to Arkansas with Mom, the boy and a couple of other adults. At first I was not sure about the trip but it was fun! The fences where we were were low enough for me to jump so a human had to be with me the whole time. Doggy heaven. I tell you if it weren't for me, these humans would have been freaking out. They finally learned that petting me and spending tons of time with me during a crisis keeps them calm. I know that there is this training for horses called Parelli, so I think will call my human training program Endymi. In Endymi, you train the humans to pet and give lots of treats and show them that they do much better when they are with their dog 24 hours a day. I think there should be 10 levels and my humans have made it to level 8. I am glad to be home and will continue my humans' Endymi training while at home.

On another note, we stayed in a hotel-thingy on our way up. There was this really freaky small room that we would go in, the door would be closed by ghosts and then when the ghosts opened the door, we would magically be somewhere else. I never want to do that again!

Mini - a.k.a. the Queen of all there Is

Hurricane, smircane, what is everyone's big deal? I went to Baton Rouge with the other cats and stayed at my grandparent's house. It was so good to see grandma, she pet me and let me stay in her chair.
It was very nice but I could do without the 1 1/2 hour drive.

Maggie - a.k.a. the Sweetest cat alive

It was horrible! I was cat-napped, thrown into a tiny jail, jiggled around forever and then in a place I vaguely remember. I too much noise so there was this sofa thing and I got in it - Ashley was on the other side. But then I snuck out of the room we were supposed to be in and found another sofa thing and hid there. Mom and Dad could not find me, it was funny to listen to them tear apart the other sofa thinking I was there! But then they found me and threw me back into the tiny jail and jiggled me around again. I am home but I may never forgive them for this...wait, is that a treat?

Ashley - a.k.a. Princess Ashley

Horrible? Maggie does not know what she it talking about. Hell on Earth. We get there and I think they are friendly humans. I start to come out to visit and suddenly there is a huge pain in my tail. The really big man-thing stepped on my tail! Hissed and hissed and let them know that they needed to put that man-thing down. I found the sofa to get in and Maggie would not let me in on her side so I was on the other side. It was awful. Even the boy said I lost weight once I got home. I am going to write my Congressman, this was completely unacceptable.

Murphy - a.k.a. Murph the Smurph

Yea, I am with everyone else on the jiggly jail thing but this was pretty fun. I got to meet Grandpa and Grandma and I don't know what Ashley's big deal is about Grandpa stepping on her tail. She is such a princess - luckily Grandpa played and played with me. I got to meet all kinds of people there and was happy when Mom showed up. My only complaint was they would not let me out - it looked really cool and familiar out there - like I had been there before? Oh well. I am with Mini, those other two cats are drama queens.

Geico and Jumper

After much discussion, Mom decided to leave us since her trip was going to be so long and Dad was staying so close. Mom gave me tons of crickets and Jumper tons of blood worms. And do you want to know what the best part was? We never lost power in our homes! I know Mom had to leave because of her Mom but I think everyone would have been better off if they stayed here. The only thing that worries me is that I know she will bring us again if the storm is bigger. Either way, we were the best off here!

Me - Yes, leaving Geico and Jumper was very difficult but I was able to get enough crickets for Geico that I thought the best thing for her was not to be moved around. Jumper is so big now and getting old for a frog, I really did not want to lose him.We evacuated them for Gustav but we it was only a 1 hour drive, this time around I had to get Mom to Arkansas. She cannot breath outside this time of year so she literally needs AC 24 hours a day. I could not take the chance of staying here even for "just a category 1 storm" (ha-ha, Isaac surprised us all!). It was the right decision because while my house kept power the whole time, it was a fluke and my mom's house did not get power until Friday. My street and the streets on each side of us were the only ones. They are calling us the freaky pocket. Too bad we can't rely on that for the next storm.

Anyway, we are all safe and sound and I will start to help my friends who were not so lucky and flooded. La Place, who figured THAT would happen.

Later gater!WishIHadAHorseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658225870536527537noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7967729381233435230.post-63547803374062141142012-08-26T16:57:00.000-05:002012-08-26T16:57:55.643-05:00Packing UpWell, with the storm coming, we are packing up. The plan is that I will take Conor (my boy), my mom and my elderly cousin Rodney to my uncles place in Arkansas. We are not sure what Pat's company will do yet. I will take the cats to Pat's parents tomorrow and then leave with my humans, Endy, Geico and the aquatics very early Tuesday morning. I have rented a trailer for mom's medical equipment so I feel in pretty good shape. Even without a direct hit, the chance of losing power is very high and my mother is fully dependent on oxygen at this point. I also can't worry about a medical emergency in the middle of this and not being able to get to a hospital if my mom has an issue.

Since 2002, I have evacuated 4 times: Lilli, Ivan, Katrina, and Gustov. I still get the same feeling when I try to figure out what to bring and what to leave. I know we will probably be back but I learned after Katrina not to expect to be back. It is a very strange feeling, and you figure out very quickly when you are running out of space. It is very strange.

So that is it for now. I will be up to my eyeballs running around until this is done. Just know that my family, including furry, reptilian and aquatic beasties will remain safe. Safe driving everyone. Dawn.WishIHadAHorseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658225870536527537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7967729381233435230.post-65354225835049671202012-08-20T11:33:00.002-05:002012-08-20T11:43:35.166-05:00Too Many Apps
